Who should have it
All pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah. The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is a mandatory entry requirement, and you’ll need proof of vaccination for your visa. We can also advise on other recommended vaccines and travel health for your trip.
How many doses
A single dose of the quadrivalent (ACWY) meningitis vaccine is usually enough. It needs to be given a set time before you travel and is valid for a number of years, and you’ll receive a certificate as proof. Your prescriber will confirm the exact timing and check it meets the current entry requirements.
Possible side effects
Side effects are usually mild and may include soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, tiredness, or a mild temperature in the days after vaccination.
Additional precautions
Crowded conditions make it easy to pick up infections, so good hand hygiene and a face covering where appropriate, helps. It’s also worth discussing other recommended vaccines (such as hepatitis A, typhoid, polio, and seasonal flu) at your consultation, along with staying hydrated and protected in the heat. Book early so everything is in place before you travel.
About the disease
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and blood poisoning. It spreads more easily in crowded settings and can become life-threatening very quickly, which is why vaccination is required for pilgrims.
