Lariam

£40 Per 8 tablets

WHO IT’S FOR

Travellers to at-risk areas

WHEN TO HAVE IT

Ideally 4–6 weeks ahead

Lariam is an antimalarial medicine used to help prevent malaria in travellers visiting risk areas. When suitable, it can be a convenient option because it is taken once a week rather than every day. There is currently a UK shortage of 250 mg mefloquine tablets reported until the end of April 2026, so availability may be limited.

Further Information

Side effects: Lariam may cause side effects such as nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, or vivid dreams. Some people can also experience mood changes or neuropsychiatric side effects, so it is not suitable for everyone.

Additional precautions: Lariam helps prevent malaria but does not replace mosquito bite protection. It is usually started before travel, taken weekly during travel, and continued for 4 weeks after leaving the malaria risk area. It should only be used after checking that it is appropriate for your medical history and other medicines.

Risks caused by malaria: Malaria is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection spread by mosquito bites. It can cause fever, chills, headache, sickness, and muscle aches, and in severe cases it can lead to serious complications or death if not treated quickly.
