Who should have it
Travellers visiting areas where polio is still present or has re emerged. A booster is also a requirement for some countries when leaving, where proof of recent vaccination may be needed for exit. We can advise whether this applies to your destination and check your vaccination history.
How many doses
For most adults a single booster is enough to top up protection, usually given as a combined tetanus, diphtheria and polio vaccine. If you weren’t fully vaccinated as a child, a short course may be needed instead. Your prescriber will check your history and confirm what you need.
Possible side effects
Side effects are usually mild and may include soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, tiredness, or a mild temperature in the days after vaccination.
Additional precautions
Where a country requires proof of vaccination to leave, the booster usually needs to be given within a set time before travel, so plan ahead. Good food and water hygiene also helps reduce risk, as polio can spread through contaminated food and water.
About the disease
Polio is a viral infection spread mainly through contaminated food and water. Many people have mild or no symptoms, but in a small number it can attack the nervous system and cause lasting paralysis, which is why keeping protection up to date matters for affected areas.
